A group of researchers, including experts from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, has shared fascinating findings in recent studies concerning the impact of fostering a positive perspective on the ageing process in relation to our health and well-being.
One has surely heard an older individual remark that they feel as though they possess far fewer years than they do in reality. Yet, is this a mere illusion or a tangible reality? David Sinclair, Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, maintains that those who adopt a proactive and positive attitude towards old age tend to enjoy a longer and healthier life than those who maintain a negative outlook.
A study published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open reinforces this thesis by revealing that positivity during the ageing process is directly linked to improved health and well-being. To reach this conclusion, nearly 14,000 adults over the age of 50 were examined, revealing that those who felt more satisfied with their ageing process had a 43% lower probability of mortality compared to those who did not feel a sense of pride regarding their age.
Beyond living longer, the data suggest that those who embrace senescence in a constructive manner demonstrate a correlation with a reduced risk of developing chronic diseases, such as diabetes, strokes, cancer, and cardiac pathologies. Furthermore, they experience healthier cognitive functioning and suffer from fewer sentiments of loneliness and depression.
This study, involving several American institutions, highlights that individuals with a positive mindset also tend to be more active and enjoy better quality sleep. According to the Australian biologist and academic David Sinclair: ‘If you feel younger, you are more likely to act that way. Cultivating a positive mindset as we age is one of the best things we can do to prolong our lives.’
